Jerk

You'll be eating lots of Jerk...

jerk_chickenJerk is a method of cooking first made popular by the Maroons, (run away slaves) who lived high in the mountains. To keep their hiding place a secret, they covered the meat with pimento trees over wood and came up with a form of grilling. Today, this tradition is carried on all over the Island and is a favorite worldwide.

Our most popular meat for jerking is chicken and pork, but we will jerk just about any meat of your choice! At Smokey Manor, Jerk is best enjoyed with small dumplings called "festivals". You'll love festivals... just  keep asking for them every day!

"Curried Goat" which was first introduced by the East Indians is another favorite among our guests. This tasty dish made with goat meat is best served with rice and peas.

Our National Dish served with pride is "Ackee and Saltfish". This looks like scrambled eggs but tastes much better and is best enjoyed with with roasted breadfruit (round fruit roasted over fire).

You'll be introduced to "Bammy and Fish" -  another Jamaican favorite. Bammy is made from cassava and can be fried or steamed. This is a winner on our menu and we love to have you sample this as soon as you arrive.

At Smokey Manor, we serve organic vegetables, home-made sweet  potato pudding, banana bread, coconut cake and more! Jamaican coffee, home grown teas and natural fruit juices are also served.

Guest Comments:

Thank You for showing me the other side of Jamaica

I have been to Jamaica several times in the past years and have never really had this experience.

Thank you for opening your beautiful Guest House to me. I would really describe it as ‘my home away from home'. I feel as if I have not only found my Jamaican home but also a whole new family.

My most enjoyable memories are of sampling mouth watering Jamaican ‘Jerk Chicken' as I toured the island. Memories of driving up the 3,000 ft Blue Mountain and seeing the lush tropical plants and breathtaking scenery will last for a lifetime.

If you are a ‘Leader/Traveler' trying to get away from the tourist oriented market and want a real cultural experience then this is the place for you.

Thank you again; I could never repay you for giving me the opportunity of seeing the ‘Hidden Jamaica'.

Each morning we woke up thinking of the cornmeal porridge, festival, and the Ackee and Saltfish.

Hi! This is Nadja Shaw and Joaille Araujo. We were reminiscing on our most recent and exciting trip to Jamaica and have come the conclusion that we couldn't have done it without you and your family.

Each morning we woke up thinking of the cornmeal porridge, festival, and the Ackee and Saltfish. We remember the country walk. It was a lot of exercise, but we enjoyed our tour of the hills in Jamaica. Another person that made our stay even more wonderful than it already was, were Marlon and his friends, Jemoi, Javere, and Lennox. They were great hosts and friends that we will all cherish forever.

We look forward to next summer when we will know more about Jamaica and the people who live in it. We can't wait to go back to our respective schools and teach our peers what Jamaica has to offer.

Thank You again,

Nadja Shaw
